Students’ word knowledge is strongly linked to academic success because students who have large vocabularies are more able to understand new ideas and concepts. A rich vocabulary also improves students’ ability to communicate through speaking, listening, and writing.
Weekly Spelling PatternEach week we will learn a new spelling pattern. We will brainstorm a list of words that fit this pattern.
High Frequency WordsHigh frequency words are words which occur most frequently in written material. These words are critical to reading not only because they are used so frequently, but also because many of them cannot easily be sounded out or illustrated.
Tier II and Tier III Academic Words This set of words is tied into our content areas (language arts, math, science, and social studies). The students will also practice using a dictionary in order to define these words.
